Five Fascinating Facts About East Wickham

1. A Forgotten Football Legacy
Did you know East Wickham once had its very own football stadium? In the early 20th century, Bostall Rangers played on a pitch where Alicia House now stands, at the corner of Wickham Street and Upper Wickham Lane. Imagine the roar of the crowd echoing through what is now a quiet residential area!

2. Greyhounds and Olympic Dreams
Before WWII, the East Wickham Open Space was home to more than just greenery — it featured a greyhound racing track and even an Olympic-sized swimming pool! It was a bustling hub of sport and leisure, long before the war reshaped the landscape.

3. A Hidden Wartime Reservoir
Beneath the peaceful East Wickham Open Space lies a disused WWII-era reservoir, once part of London’s emergency water supply system. Today, all that remains visible are a few large concrete access covers — silent reminders of the area's wartime role.

4. Secrets Beneath the Green
Beneath the Shoulder of Mutton Green lies a sealed 400-person air raid shelter, built to protect residents during the Blitz. If you look closely near Bellegrove Road, you can still spot the trench-like outline. The surrounding fence helps preserve both the green and this hidden piece of history.

5. The River That Runs Beneath Us
The ancient Wogebourne River, once notorious for flooding the area in medieval times, still flows — mostly underground. Originating from Shooters Hill, it winds its way beneath East Wickham Open Space, through Bostall Woods, and eventually into the Thames. You can catch glimpses of it near Animal Days Out (Keats Road), behind homes on Dryden Road, and along parts of Bostall Woods.
